Guess again. Some of the warranties, also known as vehicle service contracts, sold to you by car dealers can require you to have your repair work done by the dealer. What do you do when the dealer goes out of business, and you’re left holding the empty bag? Look how many dealers closed up after the recession. Brands like Pontiac, Saturn and Saab winding down, could leave you without a safety net when your dealer closes, for example.

I can’t afford to pay for my extended warranty, but I don’t want to be without one. Can I finance it?
Yes you can finance your warranty purchase, making it easier for you to buy it, while ensuring you’ll have protection on your vehicle, so ask your warranty company about zero percent financing they might have for you. Cheap pricing is fine for Walmart, but BAD for auto warranties. You get what you pay for. With high profile auto warranty failures in years past, hopefully you learned the lowest warranty price quote has the highest risk of a warranty company failing and leaving you with worthless paper. If they undersell the competition too much, something must give, and companies with lowball quotes MUST reject your claims to overcome the lower sales price. If you can’t get information on a warranty company via Web Assured or Better Business Bureau, then don’t buy from them. Cheapie warranties exclude lots of coverage, they make up stupid reasons to reject your warranty claims, leaving you with few covered repairs, many don’t answer their phones, or require you to pay shops first then beg for reimbursement from the warranty company. We only recommend auto warranties who pay repair shops directly.

Rust is like cancer for a car. Once it starts it will only get worse and grow. Being that every car manufacturer except Saturn uses sheet metal and all use metal frames and undersides, rust is a major problem. Rust is not just a northern state problem. It can happen anywhere that there is moisture, extreme weather, salt (road salt used in winter weather and salty air and spray from the ocean). Rust can be prevented and treated, however.

We have seen commercials showing us what extreme weather and conditions can do to our cars and trucks. Your vehicles sheet metal is coated by a thin protection of primer paint and clear coat. All it takes is a small nick, a chip, road debris, even hail to cause this very thin protective layer to become damaged. Even the smallest damage like a little cut can let in moisture and this will start the oxidation of the metal commonly called rust. Rust is basically a loss of electrons which weakens the metal and allows oxidation to occur. Every car gets door dings in grocery parking lots, rock chips from trucks and vehicles on the road (tip, never follow a construction truck too closely as they are always throwing rocks), etc.

It is a good practice to clean and wax your car at least every two weeks and while doing so, look for any possible areas where rust could start. Look for nicks, scratches, dings, anything that breaks through the paint. It is important to notice these areas as early as possible so you can prevent rust from ever starting. To treat a deep nick or scratch, it is important to cover the spot and seal it from moisture.

Touch up paint matched for your cars exact color will of course look best and give good protection. If touch up paint is not readily available you can use a clear touch up or even clear nail polish. Be sure to use a toothpick instead of the included brush for application. The included brush will put on too much and actually make the repair standout. It will build up both sides of the scratch or nick. A toothpick works better as it will put the touch up paint directly where it is needed, inside the cut, nick or scratch.

For best results either go to an automotive dealer or an automotive parts store whom can easily locate your particular cars paint. The exact paint will look best and help hide the repair. Some cars have clear coats and will look best with a clear coat touch up after the initial repair. This will help seal out moisture and keep your car rust free.

If rust has already started than there are treatments available for this. It is a little more involved, though. You must sand the area until the rust is gone and there is just bare metal. Walmart carries a scratch repair pen that works great for minimizing the area affected. Next a product like NeutraRust is added. This will actually chemically alter any rust that is left and prime and seal the surface for paint.
It is a good idea to check the underside of the metal where the rust occurred to make sure it has not penetrated to the other side. If it has then treat it the same way, but instead of touch up paint there are under car spray treatments that will give thicker and longer lasting protection.

For surface area repairs follow up with touch up paint. This also works with larger areas, but it may be easier to have a body shop do the job as the results will be much more noticeable. A good idea that will save you some money is to stop by your local car dealers used car department. Ask for the paint touch up guy that they use or what days he comes. He will do the repair for you at a fraction of what a body shop would charge and it will be very professional.

There you have it, how to treat and prevent rust from little nicks to bigger problems. A little proper care really can make your car last that much longer.

No use crying over spilled milk; all that GM could do is to recuperate and learn from its mistakes. Recuperation is not as easy as producing quality vehicles – it is building up a real strong reputation. The worldâ??s largest automaker has already established an excellent standing in the auto industry â?? no wonder why it sits on the automotive throne. However, critics and analysts are saying that the Toyota Motor Corp. is a serious threat to the throne. Any time this year, as predicted, a new auto giant could rule the industry.

GM showcased remarkable cars and trucks however its sales declined by 8 percent last month. The man behind the plan said it may take years before the companyâ??s reputation is repaired. “An image transformation such as ours is really a five-year process,” Lutz said in an interview. “We’re two or 2 1/2 years into it.”

Lutz radiates with urgency in the past few months. He is pushing his team to the limit to release the most-awaited vehicles in the industry. The exec also dashed off rants on his weblog to announce the latest plans of his company. Lutz could not manage to make grave errors this time around – he has to make every second count.

Lutz exudes confidence in the automakerâ??s comeback plans but he remains realistic about the forthcoming events. Critics said GM took decades to create overwhelming problems and no one could remedy them overnight.

“A change in course cannot be done purely through advertising or something like that. There’s not enough money in the world because a lot of these perceptions about brands or corporations are deeply embedded in people’s belief system,” Lutz said. He added that GM can change that belief system.

In the past six years, Lutz has shepherded GMs assembly line and some of its products are now released in showrooms. The Saturn Aura and the Chevrolet Silverado were tagged as the North American Car and Truck of the Year. “His imprint on GM has been huge,” said Jim Sanfilippo, executive vice president for AMCI, an automotive consultancy in Bloomfield Hills. “What Lutz has done is nothing short of a transformation. What he has loosed in GM’s product development system is just the tip of the iceberg. I buy his credibility. I don’t think any of the fire in his belly is gone. He is still pushing the organization to raise the bar.”

The Saturn Aura, Astra, Chevy Malibu, Silverado, GMC Sierra and the redesigned Cadillac CTS are well-crafted vehicles that are going to contribute building GMâ??s ailing standing. They feature the typical GM vehicles with Active Brakes Direct, powerful engines, superb capabilities and added features to wow more customers.

â??But it is going to take time to win back customers who feel jilted or mistreated decades ago. It’s going to take something special that makes people say, â??Whoa, wait, that’s a GM,â??â? Lutz said. “It requires friends looking at a neighbor’s new Saturn Aura and saying, ‘Hey what’s that?’ Then driving it, and saying, ‘Hey this is way better than my, insert name here, what did you pay for it?’ Then you get one after another. That’s the way Honda and Toyota grew here in the United States. But the problem is we don’t have 20 years to do it.”

GM has wasted too much time and Lutz does not want to aggravate the loss. “There is hope at the end of the tunnel with people who are currently under 25, there’s a much greater acceptance of GM and American cars in general.â?

General Motors started marketing the GMC Acadia in the United States in December last year. The introduction of the Acadia is in response to the growing demand for vehicles with flexibility and the roominess of an SUV but with handling and fuel efficiency similar to smaller cars.

The crossover SUV market is the fastest growing segment today in the auto market and General Motors decided to give GMC its first crossover vehicle. The Acadia is built around the same platform as the luxury crossover SUV Buick Enclave and the Saturn Outlook. These three vehicles are built around the General Motors Lambda platform. Of the three, the Enclave is priced the highest while the Acadia is the mid-priced sibling and the Outlook the least expensive of the three.

According to General Motors, starting price for the Acadia is $36,495. That figure is for the front-wheel drive base model. For the upscale all-wheel drive SLT trim Acadia, pricing starts at $60,000. Compared to other crossover SUVs, the Acadia is priced lower which is an effort by General Motors to increase sales.

With the upscale Acadia SLT, customers will be treated to a complete lineup comfort, convenience, and entertainment features the industry has to offer. General Motors though has given the GMC features which are not offered by its competitors. Its Xenon lighting and 19-inch wheels are just the tip of the iceberg for the Acadia in terms of features.

One of the Acadia’s not-so-common features is its remote start capabilities complemented by heated leather seats. This feature comes in handy during winter and cold seasons. With a touch of a button, a driver can start the vehicle and heat the seats before jumping behind the wheel instead of suffering the cold while starting the car and waiting for the seat to heat up.

Another unique feature that the Acadia boasts of is its heated washer fluid. In just 15 seconds, the Acadia can heat the washer fluid before squirting it against the windshield to get rid of bugs stuck to it. The heads-up information display ensures that drivers need not take their eyes off the road to check for needed information.

Aside from the 12-Volt outlet, the Acadia also offers a 110-Volt outlet which makes it easy to recharge and power up different gadgets. Aside from this, General Motors promise a lot more features for the upscale version of the GMC Acadia.

Powering the Acadia is General Motors’ 3.6-liter V6 engine with an output of 275 horsepower. The power produced by the engine can be enhanced by aftermarket parts such as GMC cold air intake. Transmitting the power of the engine to the drive wheels is the task of General Motors’ six-speed automatic transmission. This gearbox is equipped with a tow-haul mode. While this is an automatic transmission, it lets drivers change gears on their own with a manu-matic mode.

Clarke also told reporters in the sidelines of the Chicago Auto Show, when asked about GM’s capacity to sell more vehicles to the general public this year, “I am hopeful we can”. The retail sales will exclude sales to car rental agencies, large companies or government bodies that purchase fleet of vehicles.

General Motors, world’s largest automaker was able to sell about 3 million vehicles to retail customers in 2006. Clarke also mentioned that the automaker’s discussions with bankrupt former parts unit Delphi Corp. were moving forward.

Delphi has accepted a $3.4 billion bankruptcy emergence offer from a group led by Cerberus Capital Management LP and Appaloosa Management LP that obliged Delphi to reach deals with GM and its unions on contracts and other issues. The contract between GM and the United Auto Workers would expire in September and Delphi said that it hopes to complete talks with the UAW before those negations end. “It is hope that it is done before,” said Clarke in response to subject whether the deal will result in a bigger labor contract with the UAW.

And speaking of new GM vehicles, the new Saturn Astra will make its debut to the North American public at the Chicago Auto Show which is scheduled on February 9 to 18, 2007. The Astra will be made available to both US and Canadian markets starting the fourth quarter of 2007.

The new Saturn Astra is available in three or five-door model with a 1.8-litre, 140 hp ECOTEC engine. The Astra was produced alongside its Opel counterparts using quality auto parts that only the world’s largest automaker can supply like its popular GM exhaust tips at the GM Plant in Antwerp, Belgium.

According to Jill Lajdziak, Saturn General Manager, “In Europe, the Astra’s combination of style, performance, safety technology, and fuel efficiency has made it a hit with owners and auto critics alike. Now, Saturn is bringing the newly restyled Astra to North America and marrying it with our celebrated customer experience. The Astra rounds out our portfolio with a smart-driving, well-equipped compact car that shares the European designs evident in all our new vehicles.”

Since the debut of the third-generation Astra in Europe last March 2004, over 1.3 million units have been sold. The addition of the new bestselling Astra model line with its fresh new design styles and engine is expected to further boost GM’s US sales.

The present lineup of vehicles offered by Saturn includes Aura, the Outlook SUV, Vue Red Line and Vue Green Line Hybrid crossovers, and Roadster Sky. Meanwhile, the Saturn portfolio for the coming 2008 will only includes cars that are less than twenty months old.

Saturn is focusing on developing innovative products with high technological quality, solid value and excellent customer service. Just recently the Saturn Aura – which shares its vehicle architecture and design language with the Opel Vectra – was named North American Car of the Year during the Detroit Auto Show, toppling rivals like the Toyota Camry and Honda Fit (or Jazz in Europe).

The crossover is fast becoming a favorite among car buyers due to its relatively low price. Another strong selling point of the Outlook is its size. The crossover utility vehicle is designed to be bigger than its Saturn Vue SUV sibling. The adequate space inside the Outlook is part of the brand’s effort to appeal to the Americans’ penchant for roomy vehicles. The crossover vehicle, according to General Motors, can comfortably seat eight grownups.

Its powerplant is a 3.6-liter V6 engine which it shares with the GMC Acadia. Engine technologies such as the variable valve timing make the engine a fuel efficient one. Greenhouse gas emission is also cut down by the use of different filtering technologies. These attributes appeal to a lot of car buyers who are looking for cars with a good fuel economy due to the increasing price of gasoline.

The V6 is rated to produce 275 horsepower if fitted with dual exhaust systems. With a single exhaust system, the engine can produce 270 horsepower. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The precision engineered gearbox allows for smooth gear changes and good acceleration.

One slight drawback with the engine is that it is not as responsive as drivers would want it to be. The slow response of the engine is likened to the turbo lag experienced on some turbocharged engine. This drawback though is countered by the smooth handling response and a good suspension setting which offers a comfortable ride.

Gas mileage is a respectable 15.9 miles per gallon considering the size of the Outlook which tips the scale at more than 5,000 pounds. Its size shows its benefit in the fact that the high seating position provides a good view for the driver. The Lambda platform gives the Outlook a unibody frame structure which makes the vehicle somewhat lighter compared to other frame structures. The step-in height is also better than an SUV, thanks to the unibody construction.

Room inside is adequate giving ample headspace and legroom. Even the backseat which are commonly reserved for small persons or children can comfortably seat grownups. Interior amenities can be upgraded by choosing from the different trim packages that Saturn offers on the Outlook. Space for cargo can be increased by folding down the rear seats. This feat can be achieved even if one is standing outside the vehicle.

A power rear hatch is an optional feature. This feature allows for convenient loading of cargoes on the back of the crossover. Other options include the rear parking warning system which comes in handy considering the size of the vehicle. It helps drivers park on narrow parking lots without bumping into other vehicles and damaging the rear components of the vehicle such as the bumper and the Saturn taillight cover.
